It's Monday morning and you are just about to put down your baby and throw on your coat when you feel that tell-tale warmth running down your shoulder – spit up. You hand the baby off, run to the laundry room, rinse out your shirt and throw it in the dryer only to find out the dryer isn’t working. When you grab the phone book and flip to the appliance repair page you are greeted by ads professing to be the most reliable appliance repair companies in the local area. How do you choose?
This happens to everyone at some point during appliance ownership. As soon as you buy a fridge and stove and decline the extended warranty, start polling your friends and family about their repairmen. Who do they call? What do they like or dislike about them? Were they satisfied with the work? Were there any problems scheduling a time, the work itself, or the repairman? How much did it cost? You don’t want to hire just anyone to fix your dryer; you want a reputable appliance repair company that can do a good job quickly.
If you don’t end up with a recommendation, go back to the phone book. Take a look at the ads and look closely at those companies that place a sizable ad, not just the free listing. Companies that pay the price to advertise their appliance repair company in the phone book have typically been around for a long time and are dedicated to the business. Pick a few companies, call them and ask a basic question such has “How much would you charge to replace the motor in a 2004 GE Super Capacity Electric dryer? Can you give me the total cost for the repair? A reputable appliance repair company should be able to give you an estimate rather quickly.
If you get an estimate for your repair quickly, ask the following questions to confirm that you are dealing with a reputable appliance repair company:
How long have you been in business?
Will I get a written guarantee for the work and the parts?
What type of warranty do you offer?
Will you or your insurance provider cover repair costs if your repair man damages my home?
Keep in mind you should never go for the low ball estimate. It is always best to take the guy who gave you a quote in the mid-range – you’re not paying an arm and a leg, but you’re also not hiring the hobbyist to fix your dryer.
